God’s design for Sexuality
These days, there is more deception, confusion. and controversy around the issue of sexuality than any other issue in our culture.
God’s design for sexuality is clearly laid out in His Word, the Bible.
And I want to show you why God’s boundaries for sexual expression are a blessing, not a burden, and why believers must take a stand for His unchanging truth on this issue today.
The first question that we must ask is this: Does God have a right to tell a person what to do with his or her sexuality? Does anyone have authority over me, outside of me?
For Christians, the answer is unequivocally yes. Jesus is the King. Jesus is not just the Lord of my heart, He’s the Lord of my whole being.
And as Lord, He gets to tell me what to do with every part of my life, including my sexuality.
God’s design for sex is that it is a good gift that should have be enjoyed in marriage between one man and one woman. This is the only marriage that God views as valid.
Jesus Himself affirmed this view in Matthew 19:4–6 when He said…
“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”
Regardless of what the State, or a piece of paper may say, God only sees marriage as between one man and one woman. This is an institution established by God at creation, and it hasn’t changed.
It’s important to understand that within this context, God views sex as a good thing. But outside the context of God-ordained marriage, sex is a burden and actually harmful to us. It harms our relationship with each other, and our relationship with God.
With this understanding in mind, we begin to see that boundaries are actually a blessing. They’re not cruel and constricting as the world says they are – they are life-giving and loving.
The Bible lists numerous types of sexual expression and practices that are outside the boundaries God has laid out. And when you look at this list, you quickly realize that we’re all guilty.
We’ve all broken God’s laws and have sinned sexually at one time or another. So before we take the Bible and use it as binoculars, to find all the sin and everybody else’s life, we should use it first as a mirror to examine our own hearts and repent of our own sin.
And we all need forgiveness. We all need a Savior. We all need God’s mercy and grace.
The cross of Jesus Christ is a place of inclusivity and equality. Every single human being, regardless of their past sins, is invited to find forgiveness, Freedom, and abundant life in Christ. Jesus offers the same invitation to all.
He says, “die to yourself, to the person you were so that you can live a new life that pleases God.”
And He says, “leave your old life behind so that you can follow me and receive abundant, eternal life.”
Christians have to recognize that we all find grace at the cross. And in a world horribly confused by sexual sin, Christians have an opportunity to help people find healing in God’s grace. We cannot cling to sexual immorality and enjoy Freedom in Christ.
But when we deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Jesus, we discover that the Freedom and fullness we longed for is found in Him alone.
